Number 1 London

One of the best ways I find of remembering points is if it is like a trivia question. I was asked by a cabbie friend today, “Where is the only place you can legally drive on the right in London?”. I had not come across this and my first thought was something like a road in a Royal Park. Wrong! The answer is the entrace to the Savoy Hotel and Savoy Theatre called Savoy Court off the Strand.

The reason it is this was goes back to when carriages were used in London and ladies alighted on the right and it was thought this made it easier to enter the theatre and the hotel.

Number One London Apsley House

Also known as the Wellington Museum, Apsley House is Number 1 London.

The other thing he asked me was “Where is Number 1 London?”. I had no idea on this. It is Apsley House also known as the Wellington Museum. It is located on the south-east side of Hyde Park facing south across the busy intersection of Knightsbridge, Park Lane, Piccadilly and Grosvenor Place. The house was given the popular nickname of Number One, London, since it was the first house passed by visitors who travelled from the countryside after the toll gates at Knightsbridge. It is now basically in the middle of a large roundabout near the Wellington Arch.
